Welcome to our Aboriginal Cultural Museum online. On October 30th 2004, Mbantua Gallery Aboriginal Cultural Museum was officially opened by Senator Robert Hill, an art lover and member of our extensive database. You’ll find the entrance located inside the front entrance to Mbantua Gallery, 71 Gregory Terrace, Alice Springs NT Australia.
Taking over one year to build, the Aboriginal Cultural Museum is an extremely important aspect of the promotion of the aboriginal culture of Australia in general and of the Utopia district in particular. $1 of each adult ticket purchased goes into a Sports Fund for the Utopia Region.
The museum houses a vast collection of old and new landscape paintings by Aboriginal artists including the famous Albert Namatjira, Australia’s first Aboriginal artist and Aboriginal Australian citizen, Gabriella Wallace and Wenten Rubuntja. A bush tucker display, with real bush food samples, is a highlight educating the importance of these plants in traditional medicine, ceremony, diet and Dreamtime. The vast collection of old traditionally used artifacts include spears, blood stained woomeras, shields, bowls, hair belts and kadaicha shoes, feather boots worn by those who are feared for carrying out punishment.
An exhibition room showcases a selection of permanent collection works. The first Emily Kame Kngwarreye painting on canvas purchased by Mbantua Aboriginal Art Gallery back in 1987 as well as Gloria Petyarre’s first ever Leaves painting are also on display permanently. Both are revolutionary works. You can immerse yourself in much literature on the Aboriginal culture, watch a 30 minute DVD on the aboriginal art industry and Mbantua Gallery’s relationship with the people of Utopia, and much more.
