Greeny Purvis Petyarre (the late)
Alhalkere, Utopia Region
Greeny, apart from being a very high ranking tribal elder in Utopia, was also a prestigious artist.
His paintings, usually Yam Seed Dreamings, are highly sought after by collectors and galleries throughout the world. Very rarely did Greeny digress from the bold linear style encompassed by white dots that he was renowned for. On occasion he was known to use very large dump dots during a period of collaborations with the late Emily Kame Kngwarreye (Greeny being her eldest nephew). Also some of his earliest works consisted of the finest of dots in traditional ochre colours, all complete with satay sticks or the back end of a paint brush.
His colours usually indicated different stages, seasons or times, for example before germinating, after germinating, when bearing fruit and sometimes after it had borne fruit. His paintings appear to reflect his unpretentious personality, quietly unassuming but with that feeling of endurance and respect.
Greeny passed away on 3rd May 2010 and leaves behind his daughters Judy, Maureen, Jedda and Jennifer, granddaughter Katrina Greeny, wife Kathleen Purvis and many extended family including Lindsay Bird, Gloria Petyarre and Annette Davis (other Utopia artists). |
