Mbantua Gallery and Cultural Museum welcomes the introduction of the new Indigenous Art Code and is proud to be one of the first members.
The development of a commercial code of conduct was central to the
recommendations of the 2007 Senate Inquiry report: Indigenous art – Securing the Future.
The Indigenous
Art Code (the Code) aims to ensure fair trade with Indigenous artists.
The Code:
- establishes a set of standards for commercial dealing with Indigenous visual
artists;
- provides a benchmark for ethical behaviour; and
- builds greater certainty for consumers that the artworks they buy come
through ethical processes.
The Code will promote fair and ethical trade in Artwork, encourage transparency in the process of promotion and sale of Artwork and ensure that disputes arising under the Code are dealt with efficiently and fairly.
A public company, The Indigenous Art Code Limited, was established to
administer the Code. The Indigenous Art Code Ltd is lead by a board of directors drawn from the Indigenous visual arts industry and the wider
community.
Commercial art dealers including art centres, galleries and individual
dealers can show their commitment to fair and transparent business dealings with
artists by becoming a Dealer Member of Indigenous Art Code Limited and a
signatory to the Code.
